- Description
-
Providing late season color, goldenrod is a native wildflower blooming in the late summer to fall. Once established, they are drought tolerant.
Selected in Germany, 'Peter Pan' Goldenrod is a dwarf cultivar in the daisy. It is also known as 'Goldstrahl'. Graceful sprays of tiny bright yellow flowers appear in late summer into fall near the ends of branches. Many types of pollinators are attracted to the flowers.
This goldenrod is small enough to use near the front of the border to provide late-season blooms. It isn't too picky about soil types as long as they have good drainage. Plant in full sun to partial shade. In warmer climates, afternoon shade to protect from direct sun is critical. Drought tolerant once established and deer and rabbits tend to ignore it.
To have a more compact form of goldenrod, your plant can be cut back by half its size in early summer. Pinching back in late spring will also make the plant my bushy and will increase the plant's branching.
Blooming at the same time, it is sometimes confused with Ragweed. However, Goldenrod does not cause allergies. Its sticky pollen is transferred between plants by bees, not by the wind.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: No serious issues. Rust, powdery mildew and leaf spot are occasional issues.
