Oshima sedge is a grass-like herbaceous perennial in the sedge family (Cyperaceae). It is native to Oshima Island in Japan. The species epithet is Latin and means “of Oshima.”
Plant it in full sun to partial shade. It prefers rich, moist to wet soils and especially moist if planted in the full sun. Some temporary flooding is tolerated, but it does not tolerate drought.
This plant does not spread, but the clump will slowly increase in size over the years. The plant can be lifted and divided in the autumn or spring. This plant is resistant to browsing by deer.
Mass plant this sedge as a groundcover, or use it as an accent or specimen plant. It works well in a border front and can withstand the shade of woodland garden plantings. It is ideal for riparian areas, rain gardens or pond margins. It works well in containers.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: No serious problems, although aphids are sometimes troublesome.
