x Heucherella
Common Name(s):
- Description
-
Foamy bells (a common name bestowed by Plant Delights founder, Tony Avent) are the result of an artificial cross between foamflower (Tiarella spp.) and coral bells or alumroot (Heuchera spp.). The resulting hybrids are herbaceous perennials with attractive foliage and showy flowers. They are members of the saxifrage family (Saxifragaceae).
Plant in partial shade in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soils. A location with morning sun would also be suitable. Although shade is the desired location to place these plants, in cooler climates, foamy bells can tolerate more sun. The darker colored varieties or cultivars tend to be more sun-tolerant once established. The hybrids are mostly sterile, so propagate by division.
Combining some traits of its parents, foamy bells cultivars offer attractive foliage and abundant flowers. They feature a low-growing, compact habit with colorful, interesting leaves. Above the foliage, pink or white flowers form in airy sprays. Most cultivars are evergreen in milder climates, adding winter interest to your garden. Heavy frost followed by warm temperatures can cause the roots to heave.
They work well planted in small groups, massed in a border front, along a walkway or patio, in a rock garden, woodland or even window boxes. Their compact, cushiony habit makes them a great addition to mixed containers, with various cultivars fulfilling the roles of “spillers," “fillers” or "thrillers." Foamy bells can fit almost any garden. Use them in cottage, fairy, rock, shade, winter or children's gardens.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: No serious insect or disease problems. Rust is an issue with some varieties. Root weevils can cause problems. Refrain from overwatering, as it leads to root rot.
