Japanese Stewartia Stewartia pseudocamellia

Other Common Name(s):

Previously known as:

  • Stewartia koreana
Phonetic Spelling

Description

Stewartia pseudocamellia is a flowering tree in the tea family.  It has smaller flowers but more attractive bark than most stewartia and you will enjoy the flowers for a second time as the petals fall and carpet the ground with a snow-like effect in summer.  It is upright when young and oval to pyramidal as it ages and it can be single or multi-trunked.

This plant likes acid loam that is well-drained and high organic matter.  It is a difficult tree to transplant and does not tolerate wind or drought.  Plant it as a specimen near a patio, in a border or in small groups, but keep away from walkways as fallen flower petals can be slippery and messy.
