Creeping Lilyturf Liriope spicata

Creeping lilyturf is a perennial, evergreen, rhizomatous groundcover in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The name liriope is derived from new Latin and is a nymph in Roman mythology. Creeping lilyturf originates from China and Vietnam.    

Creeping lilyturf prefers partial or deep shade and soil with good drainage. This plant grows 6 to 18 inches tall with a spread of 1 to 2 feet. Though it may resemble an ornamental grass it is not a true grass. Lilyturf forms a dense, uniform cover but does not tolerate foot traffic. However, lilyturf beds can be mowed each spring before the new growth begins to eliminate last year's unsightly foliage. It tolerates salt spray, heat and drought. Plants are propagated by division.  

This plant spreads quickly by rhizomes and can invade adjacent turf areas or other ground cover beds. Lilyturf may be best suited for planting in containers or a bed surrounded by hardscape or confined with an edging that is 18 inches deep. It will grow well as erosion control on banks or as edging underneath trees or around shrubs where nothing else will grow. It can be used as a border plant in English, cottage, fairy, rock, or winter gardens. 

Quick ID Hints:

• 18" long, grass-like leaves with a 1/4" wide, serrulate margin.
• The leaves are dark green turning to bronze-green in the winter. 
• Pale violet or off-white flowers appear on short rachis in the summer.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: It is susceptible to scale, slugs and snails. An aggressive spreader, it can be weedy and difficult to remove once established. It is an invasive species in Tennessee and Georgia. Alternative plants should be considered.
