What to look for: Bonsai means ‘“tray planting’. Bonsai is a Japanese art form of growing plants in containers that mimic the shape and scale of full-size trees or shrubs. Bonsai plants require careful pruning and care to develop healthy long-lived specimens Featured here is a variety of deciduous and evergreen trees such as pine, juniper, elm and maple. Some of the tropical shrubs include Hawaiian umbrella tree and Bougainvillea.
Horticulture: Most of the plants need a winter rest but with very little soil around the roots, they also need protection from the cold. The owner places the larger containers on the ground a close to the house foundation and covers them with mulch for the winter. The smaller ones have small plastic “greenhouses” where they are protected. The tropical species must be overwintered in heated space.
