Stewartia sinensis

Chinese Stewartia is a  large multi-stemmed shrub or small flowering tree with attractive peeling paper-like reddish-brown bark and bowl-shaped white flowers. The fruits are woody capsules that burst open into five segments. The crown is initially oval and then opens out. The shrub or tree may reach a height of 15 to 25 feet and 10 to 20 feet in width. The plant is a member of the Theaceae family and is related to the Camellia. It is grown for its ornamental value.

This species is native to Central and Southeast China. It is typically found in forests, thickets, or the scrub of mountains.

The genus's name, Stewartia, is in honor of John Stuart who was a 16th-century Scottish botanist. The spelling was the result of a transcription error. During the 19th-century, the name Stuartia was used; however, the original spelling is now accepted. The species name, sinensis, is Latin and means "from China."

The Chinese Stewartia performs best if planted in full to partial sun or dappled shade. It prefers moist, well-drained, high organic matter, and acidic soils. It also prefers to be sheltered from strong winds. They are intolerant to drought and require high rainfall. The plant may be reproduced by seeds, softwood cuttings, or layering.

The bark is reddish-brown and peels revealing light brown to sand-colored bast. The leaves are dark green and ovate. The fall foliage is reddish-brown to reddish-purple. The flowers bloom from May to July and are fragrant, white, bowled-shaped with golden yellow stamens. The fruits are woody capsules that are present from September to November.

The Chinese Stewartia is grown for its four seasons of interest and ornamental value.
