The scientific name refers to the German botanist Phillipp Franz von Sibold, while the native habitat of this plant leads to the common name, Japanese stonecrop. This short, perennial succulent is native to Japan, where it can be found growing along rocky outcrops and cliffs. It had formerly been included in the genus Sedum.
It grows best in light to moderate shade and well-drained to dry soil. Too much shade will result in weak, floppy plant growth. It has good drought tolerance, making it suitable for xeriscaping. When grown in a container, allow the soil to dry out before watering.
A plant for all seasons, springtime brings blue/green foliage. The foliage will display pink edges through the hot summer months. As fall approaches, and the flowers are in full bloom, the foliage will turn bright shades of orange and red, making a stunning sight.
A very low maintenance plant, even in containers. Repotting can be conducted when the plant outgrows its existing container. Ensure that the soil is dry when repotting. Springtime is ideal.
Insects, diseases, and other plant problems: Although no serious issues, slugs, aphids, mealybugs and some scale insects can visit this plant. Overwatering or wet sites can lead to root and crown rot.
