Pyrus x triploida Chastity® 'NCPX2'

Common Name(s):

Description

Chastity® Pear is a deciduous flowering ornamental pear tree bred by Dr. Thomas Ranney of NCSU. It is a triploid specimen that produces little viable seed, reducing weediness.

Chastity® Pear grows 25 to 35 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide with an oval shape at maturity. Grow in full sun in loamy, well-drained, moist soils with an acid to neutral pH. It is resistant to fire blight, powdery mildew and leaf scorch.

This ornamental tree blooms profusely in late spring with white flowers. The summer foliage is dark green and turns into a brilliant, kaleidoscopic medley of red, orange, yellow and purple. Little fruit is produced.

Use Chastity® Pear flowering tree with three seasons of interest as a specimen, along a driveway or border, as a shade tree or an accent.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Problems:  Watch for aphids, scale and spider mites. Root rot can occur in too-wet soils.
