Pyrus Javelin® 'NCPX1'

Description

Javelin® is a flowering hybrid pear tree bred by Dr. Thomas Ranney of NCSU to grow up to 35 feet tall and only 10 feet wide, giving it a 'javelin' shape.

The columnar shape of Javelin® Pear features a strong leader and tight branching that resists breakage. Grow in full sun in most well-drained garden soils. It is urban pollution, heat, and drought-resistant once established. It is resistant to fire blight.

The pink spring buds open to clusters of white flowers with pink and yellow centers. Foliage has a purple hue in spring and matures to glossy green. Fall color is vibrant orange-red. A sparse amount of small fruit can be produced if a suitable pollinator is nearby.

Use Javelin® Pear as a specimen or accent, as a street tree, in narrow spaces and as an urban tree. It will tolerate use in streetscapes, parking lots and narrow planting strips.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Problems:  Watch for aphids, scale, and pear mites. Diseases can be powdery mildew, leaf spot and rust and pear scab.
