Description

Silkyleaf broom is a deciduous, low-growing, prostrate shrub native to most of Europe from Sweden to the Mediterranean and thrives in dry, sandy soil and dry summer climates. It grows 12 to 18 inches tall and up to 3 feet wide. It has slender, hairy, twiggy, green stems and small, deep green leaves. The underside of the leaves is silver and hairy. In the spring to summer, the shrub is covered with pea-like, golden-yellow flowers presented on terminal racemes. This plant is a member of the legume family (Fabaceae). The genus name, Genista, is Latin, meaning "broom." The specific epithet, pilosa, means long, soft hairs.

Prefers full sun and does best in well-drained, poor, dry, sandy soils. It is light-foot traffic-tolerant and drought-tolerant once established. Prefers dry, sunny climates and is intolerant of high humidity. Prune lightly to shape, but avoid cutting into the old woody stems.  As a member of the legume family, this shrub also improves the soil by fixing nitrogen. The flowers of the silkyleaf broom are self-pollinating, but they still attract bees and butterflies.

Consider using it as an ornamental groundcover along walkways, slopes, or in a rock garden. It will add splashes of golden yellow to your garden or landscape during the summer.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Generally has no serious problems. May be susceptible to aphids and spider mites. In humid conditions, fungal diseases, such as powdery mildew, can be problematic. It would likely be intolerant of the humidity in the Southeastern United States. This shrub appears leggy and untidy with fewer flowers in shaded conditions.
