Description

Franklin tree, a small flowering tree in the tea family (Theaceae), native to Georgia, usualy grows with a single-trunk with an airy rounded crown but it can also be a multi-trunked shrub. It typically grows to 25 feet tall and 15 feet wide so it is a versatile small flowering tree.

Ideal growing conditions include full sun, with some afternoon shade the summer, and acidic soil that is moist and well-drained.  It will bloom from mid-summer until the first frost with large, showy, fragrant white flowers.

Plant as a patio or specimen tree where the fragrance can be enjoyed or in the back of a border.  Its stature makes it a good choice for small spaces. It can be difficult to transplant because of a sparsely fibrous root system, so plan well when choosing its planting location. This is a lovely tree but it can struggle in urban conditions and is intolerant of drought.

Seasons of Interest:

Leaves: Fall; Bloom: Late Summer early Fall, showy

Insects, Diseases, or Other Plant Problems: Sawflies do eat these trees.  Do not plant where cotton has been grown as there is a pathogen that affects cotton that also affects Franklin trees.  Wilt and root rot can also be serious problems. Consider planting in raised beds in areas with heavy clay.   In general, this tree has a reputation for being difficult to grow.
