Kaga Nishiki Sedge Carex dolichostachya

Other Common Name(s):

Description

This sedge is an herbaceous perennial in the sedge family (Cyperaceae)native to eastern Asia to the Philippines. The species epithet is compounded from the Greek meaning “long spike,” which aptly describes the unbranched inflorescence.

Plant in full sun to partial shade in rich, moist well well-draining soils. It tolerates full sun in cool areas with moist soil; however, it needs partial to full shade in warmer climates. It is also slow to recover from being cut back, so pruning or trimming, other than removing dead leaves, is not recommended. It is tolerant of deer browsing, erosion, wet soils and heavy shade.

This plant is a sedge grown for its attractive foliage. In the cultivar ‘Kaga Nishiki’, the leaves are green edged with yellow and grow in arching clumps up to 14 inches tall and 20 inches wide.

Use this symmetrical fountain shape in a shade garden next to larger-leaved ferns and hostas, or as an accent in a shady border. Mass plant it in a woodland or rock garden, or use it in a rain garden.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: No serious problems.
