'Kaga Nishiki' or 'Gold Fountains' is a long-lived perennial cultivar in the Cyperaceae (sedge) family. The parent plant is native to Asia. The name Carex is Latin for "cutter" in reference to the sharp triangular stem edges found on most members of this genus.
This plant is a sedge grown for its attractive fine bright green leaves edged with yellow that grow in arching clumps up to 14 inches tall and 20 inches wide. Plant in full sun to partial shade in rich, moist well draining soils. It tolerates full sun in cool areas however, it prefers partial to full shade and in sun it will require an abundance of water. They are also slow to recover from being cut back. 'Gold Fountains' is tolerant of deer browsing, erosion, wet soils, and heavy shade.
Use this symmetrical fountain shape in a shade garden next to larger leaved ferns and hostas. Mass plant it in a woodland or rock garden, or use it in a rain garden.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: No serious problems. They can be sensitive to temperature fluctuations and soil conditions.
