This tree is native to the mountainous areas of Japan in cool summer climates. Prefers part shade and medium moist, well-drained soils in hot summer climates.
Best identified by the snake-like, olive green bark with narrow white vertical striping. Leaves are reddish in the spring, and mature to dark green.
