Abelmoschus manihot

Previously known as:

  • Hibiscus manihot
Description

Sunset huskmallow grows easily and quickly in well-drained, evenly moist, loamy soils in the full sun.  It spreads by seed easily.  Prune it to the ground in winter to rejuvenate growth in the spring.  Leaves are edible and make a great flowering addition to a vegetable garden or perennial border. They can also be grown in containers.  Deer do not really bother this plant.

Herbaceous perennial, grows to 4'-6' tall and 2'-3' wide. Prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, fertile, moist soil. Heat tolerant. Good bedding or edging plant. Easy to grow; works well in containers.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Aphids, slugs, and whiteflies can be problems.
