Spiraea Spiraea fritschiana

Phonetic Spelling

Description

Spiraea fritschiana, or Korean Spiraea, is a deciduous, perennial shrub that grows easily in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. It is a forgiving plant that accepts a wide range of soils and tolerates light shade better than most other species of Spiraea. You should remove faded flower clusters as soon as they fade to encourage additional blooming. Because flowers appear on new wood, you can prune out old wood in late winter to early spring before blooming.

Korean Spiraea is native to forests, forest margins, cliffs, slopes and rocky areas in China and Korea. In form, it is a compact, dense, upright, mounded shrub with green foliage with good fall color and attractive flowers in May-June. Flowers attract butterflies.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:

No serious insect or disease problems. Generally considered to be of easy culture. Some susceptibility to many of the diseases and insects that attack other rose family members, including leaf spot, fire blight, powdery mildew, root rot, aphids, leaf roller and scale.
