Salvia x jamensis

Phonetic Spelling

Description

Salvia × jamensis is a naturally occurring hybrid between autumn sage (Salvia greggii) and little leaf sage (Salvia microphylla). It is in the mint family (Lamiaceae). The name commemorates the village of Jame, Coahuila, Mexico, where the wild plants were first found. The hybrid has been recreated by horticulturists using many cultivars of the parents. The hybrids, coming in a variety of colors, are widely popular.

Unlike other varieties of sage, some afternoon shade in hot climates can be a benefit for this hybrid. Dappled shade is best. If the sun is only on one side, it will lean towards the sun. It needs well-drained soil and tolerates rocky soil. Propagate it by semi-ripe stem cuttings, which root easily. It is drought-tolerant. The cultivar ‘Mareschino’ is among the hardiest of the shrubby sages. It will survive frost, resuming growth the following spring.

Autumn sage, little leaf sage and Salvia × jamensis are popular ornamental plants but are difficult to distinguish from one another. Many modern cultivars are difficult to place in any of these three taxa. This sage is available in reds, pinks, whites and yellows. It attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators and is seldom damaged by deer.

Salvia × jamensis is great on slopes and banks, and in naturalized areas. Use it as a border, hedge, or mass planting in a children’s, rock, butterfly, pollinator, or drought-tolerant garden.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  No serious problems.
