Chinese Lucky Grass Reineckea carnea

Description

Chinese lucky grass is a grass-like evergreen perennial in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae) and is native to China and Japan. Genus is named for J. Reinecke, a German grower of tropical plants

This plant grows in mounds of arching leaves up to 8 inches tall and spreads by short rhizomes. It is tolerant of part shade-to-shade conditions in most any well-drained moist soil. It does best with consistent moisture.

It is sometimes confused with lirope but the leaves are wider with a softer texture. The flowers are fragrant and showy on short spikes that are held within the leaves. Red round fruits follow and persist through winter.

Use this plant as a ground cover under larger bushes, in the front border of a shade garden, mass planted or in a container. It tolerates heat and humidity and deer and rabbits leave it alone.
