Pyrrosia hastata Play pronunciation

Felt fern is a slow-growing, herbaceous, evergreen, rhizomatous, mounding, creeping, epiphytic fern native to Southeast China, Japan, and Korea. In its native habitat, this fern clings to wet moss-covered rocks or tree trunks and is found in the mountains or fields. It grows 6 to 18 inches tall and 1 to 3 feet wide. Its fronds are medium green, 3-lobed, spear-shaped, with a velvet-like texture, a long green stipe, green midribs, and entire margins. The underside of the fronds has gray to copper-brown colored star-shaped scales. It is a member of the polypody family (Polypodiaceae). The genus origin, Pyrrosia, is derived from the Greek word pyrros, meaning red. This refers to the reddish-like star-shaped scales on the underside of the fronds. The specific epithet, hastata, is Latin and means spear-shaped, referring to the outline of the 3-lobed frond.

Prefers partial to full shade and moist, organically rich, well-drained soil. Does best at temperatures between 60 and 75 degrees with 50 to 80% humidity. It is winter hardy in zones 8 to 10, but may need winter protection in zone 8. It is drought-tolerant once established, heat-tolerant, and resistant to verticillium wilt. May be propagated via spores, division, or rhizome cuttings. 

Grows well in containers or hanging baskets. Consider using as a border in a shaded location, or in a rock or woodland garden.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Monitor for spider mites, scale, and mealybugs. May be susceptible to root rot from overwatering. Fungal leaf spot and botrytis can occur in overly humid conditions; ensure good air circulation. Harsh sunlight will scorch the fronds. Brown fronds may be caused by dry air, direct sunlight, or chlorinated tap water.
