Polyanthus is a flowering evergreen perennial in the Primrose family and a naturally occuring hybrid of P. veris and P. vulgaris. It is native to England and western Europe and found where the parent species' ranges overlap. Like most in the Primrose family, Polyanthus is one of the first flowers to bloom in the spring. The hybrid tends to have dark green foliage and fragrant yellow blossoms, some of which have contrasting colored "eyes" and some which are plain.
Polyanthus requires a cool climate, moist organic soil, in full sun or partial shade. Intense afternoon sun and hot temperatures can cause problems. The plant may not perennialize in warm summer climates, in which case it can be treated as an annual. Alternatively, it can be grown as a biennial by sowing the seeds in summer and planting out the resulting Polyanthus in autumn for flowers in winter and spring.
Polyanthus matures to a height of 20 inches with an equal spread and works great as a large container plant on decks and at entrances. They can be propagated by seed or division in spring after flowering.
Diseases, Insect Pests, and Other Plant Problems:
