Pinus nigra

Common Name(s):

Phonetic Spelling
PY-nus NY-gruh
Description

Picturesque with age, this plant will withstand city conditions.  It has a densely conical or pyramidal habit when young.  As it ages, it becomes a broad, flat-topped tree with a short trunk and low spreading branches and a top that is semi-round.  Its dense spreading habit and stiff dark green needles afford an attractive specimen as the tree ages.

The word 'niger' translated to 'black', referring to its dark bark.

Easy to transplant.

Susceptible to Sphaeropsis tip blight and Dothistroma needle blight.  Pine moth and pine wilt are also an issue.
