- Description
-
The 'Beverly' Flowering Crabapple is a cultivar of the Malus, a genus of over 50 species of small flowering deciduous trees or shrubs in the Roseaceae (rose) family. 'Beverly' has white flowers that bloom in the spring, a nice rounded form, bright red edible fruits, and increased disease resistance. The tree will mature to a height of 25 feet with an equal spread.
This cultivar does best when planted in full sun in acidic, well drained, loamy soil. It will tolerate a range of soil types and, once established, is drought tolerant. It works well as a specimen or in small groups and its red fruits add winter interest to any landscape. If pruning is required, prune as needed in late winter. Spring pruning should be avoided because the fresh, open cuts can allow fireblight bacterium to enter.
Birds are attracted to the fruit that is often harvested for jellies.
Diseases, Insect Pests, and Other Plant Problems:
Scab, fire blight, rusts, leaf spot and powdery mildew are possible. Insect pests are of lesser concern, but may include tent caterpillars, aphids, Japanese beetles, borers and scale. Spider mites may occur.
