Description

Sea Lavender is a genus of more that 600 flowering, herbaceous perennia or annual species of shrubs, sub shrubs, and small trees. Variously known as sea-lavender, statice, caspia or marsh-rosemary, this genus is in the plumbago or leadwort family and species can be found throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. L. carolinianum or Carolina Sea lavender is native to the coastal eastern United States. The genus name is Greek for a meadow, in reference to the plant's common habitat in salt meadows.

Sea Lavender species can range from 4 inches to 2 feet in height and spread by means of rhizomes. Many of the species are exceptionally salt tolerant and do well in salt marshes and along the coast. In general, Sea Lavender characteristics include lobed leaves and showy panicles of small flowers with long-lasting colored calyces.

Sea Lavender species tend to do well in moist, sandy, well drained soil in full sun. These plants are useful in coastal gardens and as cut flowers. For propagation, seeds can be sown in spring or plants can be divided. Provide good air circulation for these plants to prevent crown and root issues. Stake tall plants, especially if grown in heavy clay soils.

Diseases, Insect Pests, and Other Plant Problems:

Generally disease and pest free but some species can be susceptible to crown and root rot.
