Lagerstroemia 'Osage' Play pronunciation

Osage crape myrtle is a semi-pendulous, multi-stemmed, flowering, deciduous large shrub or small tree cultivar. It is a cross between (L.indica 'Dwarf Red' x L. subcostata var. fauriei) x (L. indica 'Pink Lace' x L. subcostata var. fauriei). It was hybridized in 1972 and introduced in 1987 by the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, DC, for its mildew resistance. It is a member of the loosestrife family (Lythraceae). This plant grows 12-15 feet tall, 10 to 15 feet wide, with slightly pendulous panicles of clear pink, crinkled-petaled florets, blooming from July to late September. The leaves are dark green on the upper surface and yellowish-green beneath, elliptical to obovate, and become red to dark red in the fall. The bark is grayish-brown and becomes mottled, exfoliating, and chestnut brown as the tree ages.

Prefers full sun and moist, well-drained, loamy, clay, and sandy soils. It is hardy in zones 7 through 9. A layer of organic mulch will help keep the plant retaining moisture. It has good drought tolerance once established and is mildew-resistant. Pruning should be completed in winter or early spring, as this plant blooms on new wood.

'Osage' is prized for its graceful habit, light pink blooms, and dark brown bark. It works well in urban areas including city parks and home landscapes. It also makes an excellent specimen or large container plant.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Generally considered disease- and pest-resistant. Monitor for aphids, Japanese beetles, and scale. May be susceptible to leaf spot.
