Description

Juniperus horizontalis or creeping juniper is an evergreen goundcover plant in the Cupressaceae family.  Its best-growing conditions include dry sandy soil, but it will adapt to a variety of conditions with the exception of wet locations.  In its native locations, it can be found growing on slopes, cliffs, prairies, sand dunes, and stream banks.  Rocky sites are not a problem for this versatile species.  Its low-growing spreading habit can form a dense mat of attractive foliage.

'Limeglow' is an attractive cultivar that grows slowly to 12 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide.  The showy chartreuse foliage turns to a darkened burnt orange in the winter. Plant 'Limeglow' in the full tun in well drained moist to dry or rocky soils.  This dwarf, creeping plant is resistant to browsing by deer, and is drought and air pollution tolerant but will not tolerate wet soil.

Its low mounding spreading form mass planted will manage erosion along a slope.  Place it as an accent in a rock garden, near a foundation, or at the edge of a garden wall.  The yellowy evergreen foliage will provide winter interest in a cottage garden border planting, lining a walkway, or near a patio or pool.

A prize-winning specimen, 'Limeglow' was awarded the 'Award of Garden Merit' of the Royal Horticultural Society.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Junipers are susceptible to blights.  Root rot may be present if proper drainage is not provided and the plant is situated in a wet location.  Some insects affecting this plant are aphids, bagworms, webworms, and scale.
