Hardy gloxinias are summer-flowering annuals or herbaceous perennials are native to Asia and are members of the trumpetvine family (Bignoniaceae). The genus name commemorates the French Jesuit missionary Pierre Nicolas d'Incarville, who collected plants while in China in the 18th century.
The plants may be stored over winter in a greenhouse, cold frame or indoors, as they can be injured by temperatures below 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Store the crowns or tuberous roots in soil or sawdust and keep them slightly moist at 35 degrees Fahrenheit. When the last danger of frost has passed, the crowns or roots should be planted to a depth of 3 in. These plants grow in sun to part shade, forming a crown on sturdy stems.
These plants are good for rock gardens, Asian gardens, shade gardens and cottage gardens.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: No significant problems. If grown indoors it may get spider mites and white flies.
