Description

Japanese Holly is a handsome evergreen shrub in the Aquifoliaceae family. It is dense, rigid, and compact and grows up to 6 1/2'. You can severely prune to control height.  It tolerates drought and air pollution. It also tolerates poor, sandy, and clay soils. It is intolerant of alkaline soils. It tolerates the shade and is easily transplanted. It has a slow growth rate and has pest problems.

Quick ID Hints:

  • Has small, dark green, crenate, convex leaves.
  • The underside of leaves are dotted with black glands.
  • New stems are greenish and turn gray-green in the 2nd year.
