- Description
-
Evolvulus glomeratus, or Dwarf Morning Glory, is a tender, non-vining, herbaceous perennial in the Morning Glory family and native to South America. It is an herbaceous perennial, but not cold hardy, and thus is more often grown as an annual. It has brilliant blue flowers throughout summer over a carpet of fuzzy, oval-shaped green leaves. The flowers usually close up at night and on cloudy days. The genus name is Latin for "to untwist or unravel" because these plants, unlike most Morning Glories, do not twine. The species name means clustered into more or less rounded heads.
Dwarf Morning Glory does best in full sun with moderate, consistent watering.
As an annual in containers, it is often hung over the edge of baskets. As a perennial groundcover, it spreads over stone walls or flower beds. It is not a hardy plant, but if planted in the ground, it will form sprawling mounds 9 to 18 inches tall. Trailing stems tend to grow somewhat horizontally to downward when planted in baskets or containers. It is drought tolerant.
If you take cuttings in summer for next spring, you can keep them indoors in a bright cool location. Water sparingly.
