False horehound Eupatorium rotundifolium

Phonetic Spelling
yoo-puh-TOR-ee-um ro-tun-di-FOH-lee-um
Description

Roundleaf thoroughwort is a native perennial in the aster (Asteraceae) family found in eastern and central USA including NC.  Typically found in wooded locations, savannas and bogs, it can tolerate both wet and dry conditions.

The leaves can give you a key to distinguish this species of Thoroughwort from other species.  The paired, roundish or rotund, gray/green leaves as well as its stalkless form distinguish it from Eupatorium pubescens, which grows taller, and has an olive-green tone to its sharply toothed, oval-shaped leaves. Roundleaf throroughwort has low, rounded teeth on its leaf margin.

The leaves of Roundleaf Thoroughwort are generally opposite but can also be alternate. It typically dies to ground level during the winter months, only to emerge again in the springtime with rosettes of rounded leaves.  As the seasons progress, the plant will continue an upward growth pattern, reaching a typical height of 3'.  Some may grow taller. Each single stem can have a few branches near the upper part.  The branches will have a few heads of flowers.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  No serious issues with insects or diseases.  Prolonged exposure to drought conditions can cause the foliage to scorch.
