Description

Flame violet is a cultivar with variegated pink, green, and white leaves.  The flower blooms a brilliant orange-red. This plant has stoloniferous stems and is slow growing. It can be propagated by stem cuttings.

This plant needs fertile moist but well-draining soils and high humidity. This cultivar can be a challenge to grow, but once you find a good spot that keeps it happy don't move it around. It will also grow in terrarium-type conditions. Just be sure not to overwater as root rot can occur.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:   Insect pests include aphids and mealybugs.  Fungal leafspots, stem blights, and root rots occasionally occur.  Leaves scorch in full direct sun; dieback occurs if too much water or too little air circulation, leaf margins turn brown from low humidity and too dry conditioning.

The Clemson Cooperative Extension Home and Garden Information Center has a factsheet on common African violet diseases and insect pests.
