- Description
-
Dwarf morning glory is a low-growing, bushy, compact, non-vining annual native to the West and Central Mediterranean. Its flowers resemble those of the morning glory (Ipomoea tricolor); hence, its common name. It grows from 1 to 1.5 feet tall and equally as wide, with branching stems, oblong to lance-shaped medium-green leaves, and trumpet or funnel-shaped flowers with bright blue petals, a white throat, and a yellow center. Flowers appear during the summer months. Although a flower lasts for only one day, the plant continues blooming in succession over the summer. It is a member of the morning glory family (Convolvulaceae). The genus name, Convolvulus, is derived from the Latin word convolvo, meaning "twining around." The specific epithet tricolor refers to the three-colored flowers.
This annual prefers full sun, but it is best offered afternoon shade in hot summer climates. It will tolerate most soil types as long as it is moist and well-drained. Once established, it can tolerate both heat and drought. Propagated by seeds, either grown 4 to 6 weeks indoors before the last spring frost or sown outdoors after the last spring frost. As an annual, it may be grown in zones 2 to 11; however, it may survive as a short-lived perennial in only zones 9 to 11.
Consider this easy-to-grow, low-maintenance annual for a hanging basket, border planting, container planting, or a rock garden.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Monitor for aphids and spider mites; otherwise, no serious insect or disease problems.
