Chrysojasminum parkeri

Parker jasmine is a deciduous subshrub from the western Himalayas. It is a member of the olive family (Oleaceae), although it differs from other members of the family by having alternate, not opposite, leaves. This feature makes it easy to distinguish species of Chrysojasminun from yellow-flowered jasmines (Jasminum) such as winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum). Chrysojasminum is a genus recently separated from Jasminum. The genus name means “golden Jasminum.” The species epithet commemorates Richard Neville Parker, chief forest conservation officer in Punjab, who first introduced this species into cultivation in the UK. 

Parker jasmine grows in a range of soil conditions, though it prefers well-drained areas. It will tolerate full sun to partial shade.  

The shrub grows as a low mat of spreading stems. The leaves have 3 to 5 leaflets. The small, yellow, trumpet flowers appear in early summer. They are fragrant. Flowers are followed by translucent greenish white berries in the fall.

Parker jasmine is best suited to rock gardens, but it also thrives in containers and is a good subject for a cool conservatory.
