- Description
-
Palm sedge is an erect herbaceous perennial in the sedge family (Cyperaceae). It is native to southern and south-central China. The species epithet is taken from the Greek meaning “leafy head” and refers to the rosettes of leaves borne on the ends of erect stems, like miniature palms (hence the common name).
It grows best in moist, humus-rich, continuously moist soil, but it will tolerate average moisture or even dry conditions, once established. It grows best in partial or full shade, tolerating full sun only if it is continually moist. It can self-seed.
The tall, leaf-bearing stems of palm sedge are unusual for the genus. ‘Sparkler’ is more common in cultivation than the all-green species. It grows to a maximum height of two feet. If grown in a container, it should be overwintered in a greenhouse or conservatory to protect the roots.
Use palm sedge as an accent, ground cover or border plant in a shady or partially shaded area. It is suitable for a pond margin, Asian garden, or rain garden.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: No serious problems.
