- Description
-
Bellflower is a compact herbaceous ornamental groundcover or subshrub in the Campanulaceae, or Bellflower family. It is native to the Caucasus region and therefore requires soils with excellent drainage. It has trailing stems, and reaches a height of about 4"-6". It has showy fairly large blue-purple flowers and leaves that can remain evergreen in certain environments. Plant it in the full sun to partial shade in moist soils. It makes an excellent addition to a rock or crevice garden and looks attractive trailing over a garden wall. It also naturalizes easily and can be used as a groundcover. Plants handle transplanting well. To propagate this plant stratify the seeds with cold by sowing them in the winter. Root cuttings are also an effective method of propagation. The Latin name campana means "bell".
