- Description
-
Miss Pearl butterflybush is a hybrid cultivar of 'Miss Molly' and 'Ice Chip' and was developed at North Carolina State University by Dr. Dennis Werner in the snapdragon family (Scrophulariaceae).
The shrub grows up to 4.5 feet tall and 5 feet wide, preferring a sunny location and well-drained soil for best performance. It is drought-tolerant once established. It is easy to grow and no deadheading is necessary. Miss Pearl may die back to the ground in colder zones but will resume growth from the crown the following spring. In regions where above-ground shoots survive over winter, plants may require occasional moderate pruning in spring to maintain the desired compact shape.
Miss Pearl is considered sterile, producing nectar but no pollen. It boasts crisp, clean, pure white, slightly ruffled flowers that bloom on new wood, providing a long season of blooms.
Use this shrub in the border, as a specimen or hedge in a drought-tolerant, pollinator or cottage garden.
Insect, Disease and Other Plant Problems: Spider mites can become a problem during drought. Nematodes are an occasional pest problem.
