Aristolochia gigantea

Phonetic Spelling
a-ris-toh-LOH-kee-uh jy-GAN-tee-uh
Description

Brazilian Dutchman's Pipe is an evergreen vine in the birthwort family.  The common name arises from the flower shape which resembles the pipes used in northern Germany and the Netherlands.  It twines up supports like trellises or arbors and produces very large (1'-2' across) unusual apetalous pouch-like flowers.  Grow it in moist, well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade avoiding dry soils.  It appreciates afternoon shade in hot inland climates and does tolerate being planted in containers.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  No serious problems.
