- Description
-
This plant produces its leaves after flowering. The fragrant flowers appear on "naked" stems. The plant dislikes dividing. If divided, it may not boom for several years. It can be transplanted. The best time for transplanting is in the fall after the plant blooms and the leaves are emerging. Plant with the tip just showing or barely covered.
It has a perennial mother bulb that produces offset bulblets and seed and requires a warm (60 to 80 degrees F) to cool (35 to 50 degrees F) to warm (60 to 80 degrees F) annual thermoperiodic cycle. It will tolerate summer drought but needs moisture during winter (growing) seasons. It normally is not susceptible to animals.
This bulb planted in the ground will do better than if potted. It also prefers a sunny spot over the shade.
Space: 6-12 in. apart, 1-2 bulbs per sq. ft; does very well when planted in clumps of 3 or more bulbs
Depth: 5 in. to the base of the bulb
Usage: Beds, exhibition bulbs, rock gardens, and woodland gardens
Organ: Tunicated bulb (also perennial bulb and summer bulb)
Hardiness: Tender III - Injured at temperatures below 35 degrees F (2 degrees C) when planted - cold hardy to zones 8 through 10.
Light: Full- PM Sun
Season: Summer; plant in fall
Insects, Diseases and other Pant Problems: A generally disease-free plant. Aphids, mealybugs, and red spider mite may be pests to affect the plants' health.
The plant toxicity is more pronounced in pets, especially cats.
