- Description
-
An easy plant to transplant, Weigela florida is native to North China, Korea, and Japan. It is a dense, rounded, deciduous shrub. Branching is somewhat coarse, and branches on mature shrubs tend to arch toward the ground. Funnel-shaped, showy rose-pink flowers (each to 1.25” long) bloom profusely in the spring, with a sparse and scattered repeat bloom often occurring in mid to late summer. The bloom period will last approximately 2 weeks. For the best flower and foliage performance, plant in full sun. It can be planted in an area with light shade, however, blooming will not be as abundant as when placed in full sun.
When mature, older interior branches can be removed in late winter to improve the plants vigor and blooms the following year. This plant blooms on old wood, therefore, pruning is best done just after flowering.
Many of the dwarf cultivars can be grown as container plants.
Air pollution and clay soil tolerant. This plant is slightly salt tolerant.
Blooming takes place in mid to late spring after the foliage appears. If not pruned, branches will form a fountain-like outline which is highly ornamental while covered with blooms Pruning is necessary after blooming to keep tidy, otherwise it will take on a weedy appearance.
Cultivars available include variegated leaf forms and many anthocyanin-hued flowers as well as a yellow-flowered cultivar. It is often utilized as foundation plant, massing planting or a shrub border.
Wildlife Value: This plant is attractive to hummingbirds.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Minimal insect and disease damage. It may be damaged by deer. May experience winter dieback.
