Ironweed is an upright, clump-forming, attractive perennial that is native to North America and is in the aster family. The strong upright stems may appear reddish with fine linear green leaves. giving it a willowy appearance. It tolerates a variety of soil types and once established it can withstand drought or occasional flooding. The frilly purple blooms are visited by butterflies and bees in mid to late summer.
It is not found commonly in the wild other than Arkansas and Oklahoma and is mostly available through nurseries. The cultivar 'Iron Butterfly' is a popular plant. Use in the native and pollinator garden in sun to partial shade.
