Sabatia angularis

Common Name(s):

Phonetic Spelling
sa-BAY-tee-uh ang-yoo-LAIR-iss
Description

Rose-pink Sabatia is a wildflower with showy, fragrant, 1 in. single pink flowers with five petals and a greenish-yellow star-shaped eye. The flower cluster has opposite branching. Flowers are followed by seed capsules (1/3” long), each having numerous tiny seeds which are easily scattered by wind when ripe to new locations. Although rose pink is biennial, it will easily self-seed in the garden, often forming perennial-like colonies producing abundant bloom each year. Opposite egg-shaped leaves, 0.7 to 1.5 in. long with a heart-shaped clasping base. Plant them in woodland borders, marshes, and thickets.

This plant was selected as the 2020 NC Wildflower of the Year, a program managed by the North Carolina Botanical Garden with some financial support from the Garden Club of North Carolina.
