Description

The Therese Bugnet is a dense large shrub rose bred by Georges Bugnet around 1941 and named after his daughter.  The parentage is Rosa rugosa seedling and Betty Bland.

This rose grows upright 5 to 7 feet tall and wide with multiple stems.  Flowering is best in full sun with slightly acidic, medium moisture, well-drained garden loams.  Mulch for the best flowering and apply fertilizer in early spring and summer. Deadhead for more blooms. Protect with mulch in cold areas over winter and remove fallen dead leaves on the ground. The Therese Bugnet blooms on last year’s wood so only prune the oldest canes after flowering and reduce strong new growth by one-third in late winter. Propagate by stem cuttings or stolons.

In addition to being hardy, the Therese Bugnet is disease-resistant.  The strong clove fragrance is similar to Old Roses.  The loosely double pink flowers are slightly ruffled and 4” wide.  It blooms continuously from spring to late fall.  The stems are mostly free of prickles and red over winter.  The Therese Bugnet is tolerant of air pollution and part shade.

The large rose can be used as a screen or windbreaker.  Plant Therese Bugnet as a specimen, in borders, or as foundation plants in a butterfly, cottage, or English garden.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Therese Bugnet is very disease resistant but watch for black spot, rust and powdery mildew, especially in humid conditions It can spread by suckers if grown on its own roots stock See pests of roses to the left. Deer will browse roses.
