-
Barbra Streisand is a hybrid tea rose in the Rosaceae family bred by Tom Carruth and introduced by Weeks Roses in 2001. Parentage is (Blue Nile x (Ivory Tower x Angel Face)) X New Zealand. It was named for Ms Streisand who is a rose enthusiast and perfectionist. She wanted a rose with a strong fragrance, large flowers and beautiful color and this fits the bill.
The shrub grows 3-5 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide in an upright bushy form. For best results, plant in full sun in amended well-drained moist soil. Prune in late winter to remove dead, diseased or crossed canes and into 1/3 its size or more if needed. In colder climates, it will need spring freeze protection. Performs best in warmer climates.
Long, shapely pointed buds open into 4-5 inch fully double, high-centered lavender flowers with darker edges that have 26-35 petals and a strong, citrus fragrance. The leaves are glossy green making a good background for the flowers and grow in stems with prickles. Repeat blooming will occur from spring to fall. Deadhead to encourage additional flowers.
Use this shrub in the border, in groups, as a foundation plant or specimen. Plant in a pollinator, cutting or cottage garden.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Good disease resistance but blackspot sensitive. See pests of roses to the left. Deer will browse roses.
