Nerine is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae, subfamily Amaryllidoideae. They are bulbous perennials, some evergreen, associated with rocky and arid habitats. They are injured below 25 degrees F (2C).
Most have strap-shaped leaves to about 1 foot long; depending on the species, these either die back well before bloom time in late summer or early autumn or emerge only after its bloom period. All have an attractive, broad, funnel- or trumpet-shaped flowers carried in clusters atop leafless stems.
They are best grown as container plants. Use a rich, well-drained growing medium, and set the bulbs with the neck well above the soil level so only about half the bulb is buried, approximately 2 in deep to the base. Place the bulbs 6–8 inches apart. The bulbs can be left in the same pot for several years, as they bloom best when crowded. Water freely when the plants have foliage but do not water when the bulbs are dormant. They grow best in full to AM sun.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: All nerines are highly susceptible to mealybug infestation.
