Neillia uekii

Common Name(s):

Phonetic Spelling
NEEL-lee-uh YOO-eh-kee-eye
Description

Korean Neillia is a deciduous, flowering shrub in the rose family with a compact habit that spreads by suckers. It is a native of Korea and will grow to 6 feet tall and wide with spring blooms of white to pink flowers in long clusters. The foliage is dense with arching branches and 5-lobed rich-green leaves that turn yellow in the fall. The genus name honors Patrick Neill (1776-1851), a printer and Scottish horticulturist and naturalist, and secretary of the Caledonian Horticultural Society.

Korean Neillia does best in full sun to partial shade, with consistent watering and good drainage. For maximum blossoms, prune immediately after flowering and thin out old stems as needed. It is reasonably hardy, but should be protected from winter winds. You can also remove suckers to prevent unwanted colonial spread.

Korean Neillia is useful as a hedge and can be trimmed. It is popular with bees and butterflies.
