Common Name(s):

Previously known as:

  • Dipladenia sanderi
  • Mandevilla splendens
Phonetic Spelling
man-de-VILL-uh SAN-dair-ee
Description

A tropical vine that is commonly grown as a houseplant in temperate regions.  If grown outdoors, plant in a container as they are cold sensitive; bring indoors in areas with frost and allow soil to dry out during the winter.  Prune before placing back outdoors in the spring. Prefers moist, well-drained soil appreciates afternoon shade in hot humid climates.  Tolerant of coastal conditions; Provide plenty of water in summer.

Indoors they need bright indirect light, average room temperature, and high humidity.  Soil should remain moist but not soggy.  Pinch gangly growth back for a more busy habit.  It may need a trellis or stake to remain upright.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: No major problems but can attract mealybugs, aphids and scale insects.
