- Description
-
Saucer magnolia is a deciduous tree or large shrub in the magnolia family (Magnoliaceae). It is a hybrid cross between M. denudata and M. liliiflora that grows 15 to 33 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide.
This tree has a fleshy root system that requires plenty of room. It prefers consistent and regular moisture in well-drained, acidic, loamy, organically enriched soils and full sun to partial shade. It needs a site protected from strong winds and late frosts that can kill its late winter blooming flowers. Avoid southern exposures near structures (which absorb and reradiate heat), as the extra warm may encourage the buds to open too early and be damaged by subsequent frosts. Plant late-flowering cultivars to avoid severe frost damage. This tree is mildly resistant to damage by deer and tolerates air pollution.
Saucer magnolia makes a great specimen or lawn tree planted in a park or recreation area. Its flowers also provide beauty next to a patio or in a children’s garden.
Quick ID Hints:

-

Insects, Diseases and Other Plant Problems: Soft magnolia scale produces honeydew that leads to black sooty mold. Leaf spot and canker can be troublesome.
