Magnolia grandiflora 'Hasse' Play pronunciation

Magnolia grandiflora 'Hasse' or 'Hasse' southern magnolia is a broadleaf evergreen tree cultivar with a compact, upright habit, slender canopy, large, glossy, dark green leaves, and large, fragrant, creamy white flowers. Brownish cones with red seeds follow the flowers, which serve as a food source for many birds. It grows 25 to 40 feet tall and 6 to 12 feet wide, and has a wide-spreading root system that exceeds the canopy size by 4 times. 

Prefers full sun to partial shade, particularly in the afternoon, and moist, well-drained, organic, slightly acidic soil. It is heat- and humidity-tolerant, and well-suited for the southeastern United States. In the landscape, it is best to plant in an area that will accommodate its wide-spreading root system.   This extra space will also help the tree become more drought-tolerant. If erosion is an issue, the tree's root system will help stabilize the soil and prevent washing. Prune after flowering is completed to remove dead or damaged branches.

'Hasse' southern magnolia is a popular, low-maintenance cultivar and is found in many landscapes. It may be used as a street tree or screen and windbreak. With its wide root spread, it makes a great candidate for a location on a slope.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Potential insect pests include scales, Tulip-poplar weevil, and Magnolia borer. It is susceptible to verticillium wilt and magnolia scale. Other possible diseases include canker, blight, scabs, black mildew, and leaf spot. The wide-spreading root system does not tolerate any damage during construction. When first transplanted, leaf drop can occur during the first year due to transplant shock. Once acclimated to its site, leaf drop will decrease. Shed leaves and ripened fruits can create litter.
