Asian Spicebush is a large, showy, deciduous shrub or small tree in the laurel family and native to Asia. It matures to 8 to 10 feet tall, sometimes reaching 16 feet, with an equal width and a pyramidal habit. The flowers are inconspicuous, but the willowy, narrow green leaves in the summer turn brilliant shades of red, purple and orange in the fall. The leaves then turn tan and persist into winter. The genus name honors Johann Linder, an eighteenth century Swedish botanist and physician.
Plant Asian Spicebush in well-drained, consistently moist acidic soil in full sun or partial shade. For propagation, the seed has a short viability, should not dry out, and should be grown in pots as soon as possible.
Use in a border, for screening or as a specimen. This species, and its variety, is often confused in cultivation with its close relative, L. angustifolia.
