Description

Sweet Pea is a bushy or climbing, flowering, cool weather annual in the bean family and native to the Mediterranean. It has very fragrant flowers, dark green leaflet pairs, and winged stems that end in tendrils. If allowed to climb, it will reach up to 8 feet. If grown as a bush, it will grow to a 3 foot tall bush. The genus name comes from the Greek word lathyros for pea or pulse. The species name means fragrant.

Sweet Pea prefers a cool climate, full sun, rich, fertile and well-drained soil. It will tolerate some shade and frost and cool and heat resistant cultivars are available. For best results, plant in early spring, add organic matter, mulch and keep evenly moist. Flowering will decrease if seed pods are allowed to develop. Sweet pea can be a challenge to grow in hot and humid summers. Avoid planting sweet peas in the same location in consecutive years.

Plants may be grown in bushy mounds or as climbers, but climbers will need a support structure. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong bloom. Sweet Peas are poisonous and should not be planted near edible peas.

Diseases, Insect Pests, and Other Plant Problems:
